Legislative Legal Staff
For over 30 years the Alabama Law Institute has provided legal counsel for both the Senate and House Judiciary Committees. In recent years legal counsel has also been provided to
the House committees on the Constitution, Campaigns & Elections, Health, Commerce and Small Business, County and Municipal Government and to the Senate Committees on Transportation
and Banking.
Legislative Law Clerk Program
In 2013, the Law Institute initiated a Legislative Law Clerk Program to provide efficient and cost-effective legal research for Legislators while giving students valuable
experience in the mechanics of government. Law Students from each of Alabama’s accredited law schools, which are selected, earn credit hours while they assist in legislative
research and drafting during the Legislative Session.
Model City Ordinances Review
Since 1991, in conjunction with the Alabama League of Municipalities, the Institute has trained Law Students to assist cities in modernizing and computerizing their municipal
ordinances. The Law Students are trained to compare the current ordinances with the ordinances of other similarly sized cities and to offer various options to address a variety
of legal concerns. This service has mostly been used by small municipalities that do not have a full-time attorney.
Cities who are interested should contact the Alabama Law Institute directly. The current cost is $650 for three days of review plus mileage and expenses.
